What is Make Music Day PDX?
Make Music Day PDX is “Music by the People, For the People.”
- A way for all Portlanders to celebrate music and join in a community event.
- A city-wide celebration dedicated to musical expression.
- An event open to musicians of all genres.
When and where will Make Music Day PDX take place?
Make Music Day PDX will take place on the summer solstice, June 21, 2017. Performances can be scheduled from 12:00 noon to 9:00 PM in spaces open for public participation throughout Portland.
Where may I perform?
Performances will take place in a variety of spaces, many outdoors. The goal is to generate a generous soundscape of music throughout Portland as people walk around participating spaces. Several venues are set in Portland Public Parks. Other venues are located indoors, some of them with fine pianos available.
Who can participate?
Professionals, amateurs, part-time musicians, and students are all welcome. All you need to do is sign up, make your match with a venue, practice up, and then show up and perform. Surprise PDX with your creativity!
How long will each performance last?
Often one hour, plus time to set up and break down, but this can vary. Artists and venues must agree to the length of your performance during the matchmaking process. Remember to show basic courtesy: set up your equipment discreetly while others perform; avoid profanity in your performance; and close your performance on time so others have a chance to perform.
What if a band signs up now, and has to back out later?
Once your event is confirmed by your chosen location,we will block off your spot and secure your permits and then count on you to perform. Please let us know promptly if unexpected events require you to cancel, but don’t do so lightly.
Who will provide what I need for my concert?
Mostly you. You will need to bring your own instruments and microphones. Check the information about the venues; some will have a sound system supplied and others will not. Some indoor venues will have a piano.
Will I be paid to perform?
No, participation as a musician in Make Music Day PDX is voluntary. This allows musicians of all skill levels the opportunity to come out and perform in public if they wish and allows us to put on this musical event with a limited budget.
Is there an admission charge for a Make Music PDX concert?
No. All Make Music Day PDX concerts are free and open to all members of the public.
What happens if it rains?
The show will go forward, come rain or come shine. Many of the outdoor venues have cover.
Who organizes this event?
Make Music Day PDX is a volunteer-led organization that recruits musicians and venues, handles permits, and promotes concerts on June 21. Make Music Day PDX joins an informal confederation of cities worldwide in creating opportunities for all stripes of music makers to take to the streets and celebrate music on the summer solstice.
How can I get involved as a volunteer?
There are lots of ways to volunteer, particularly by helping to facilitate the smooth running of events. Contact us at makemusicdaypdx.org and we’ll run the options by you.
Can I donate to Make Music Day PDX?
We’re glad you asked! Contributions can be made by clicking on the Donate Now button on this website. Make Music Day PDX has 501(c)(3) non-profit status with the IRS and contributions are eligible to be tax deductible.
How do I sign up to perform?
Follow the instructions in the Participation section of this website and click the Musicians Sign Up! button. Musicians and venues will use our registration and matchmaking tool, which is hosted on this site, to register and make concert arrangements. Before you begin registration be sure to watch the tutorial videos by clicking on the big blue Instructions and question marks. You’ll see these video prompts after you click on the “create artist” or “create venues” buttons. If you encounter problems, please contact us at email@example.com and we’ll work through the problem together.
How will Make Music Day PDX promote this event?
Willamette Week, KINK and All Classical radio are media sponsors of Make Music Day PDX and will be promoting the event. We will list all venues and concerts on the Make Music Day PDX website.
I’ve looked at all of my options and chosen a possible venue. What happens now?
After you make a request for a venue, we will confirm, modify or decline the opportunity within ten days. If you wish to modify, you should contact us by email at makemusicdaypdx1.org. Once we agree on a venue and time, it will be recorded and Make Music Day PDX will send final approval. Before approval by artist, venue and Make Music Day PDX, your desired match will appear on your “Account” page under “My Performances” and will be listed as “pending confirmation.” After approval, the match will be recorded at “Performances.”
